Carlingwood Y – news!

From Jacqueline Lawrence – YMCA Acting Coordinator, Marketing and Communications| marketing et communications

It has been just over a year since the YMCA-YWCA of the National Capital Region made the difficult decision to close its original Carlingwood Y on Lockhart Avenue. During that time, the Y has been actively exploring opportunities to return to the community.

The YMCA-YWCA is excited to share that it has been given an opportunity to lease a 23,500 sq. ft. space at the Carlingwood Mall. This space will be extensively renovated and will include strength training and aerobic conditioning equipment, group exercise classes, children’s recreational programs, a pool for leisure swims, aquafit classes, and children’s swim lessons, inviting social spaces and child minding services.

The plan is to develop a Carlingwood Mall Y that will provide a range of programs and services designed to meet the needs of the community. The Y wants to create a safe, inclusive place where children, youth, adults and families feel they belong.

But the Y needs help to make this a reality! If you want the Y back in Carlingwood, you can pre-register to become a member of the new Carlingwood Mall Y, and tell your friends, family and co-workers about the Y’s plans.

The YMCA-YWCA has 60 days – until September 30 – to pre-sell enough memberships to make the Carlingwood Mall Y a viable operation and to plan its opening date in January, 2014. The Y must remain committed to being responsible financial stewards while continuing to meet the needs of the community. If the YMCA-YWCA meets its target, it will move forward. If the Y is unable to reach its target, it will not be able to proceed.

To learn more, visit Y staff at the Carlingwood Mall (booth at main entrance #1 from August 1 to September 30), call 613-237-1320 ext. 2999, or email carlingwood@ymcaywca.ca.

Community Associations & Partners…

As a result of significant work with City staff, I am pleased to report to you that we have secured Bay Ward’s place as a member area of the City Task Force group on Zoning Consistency.

Many of our neighbourhoods are faced with increasing inappropriate and unwanted infill and intensification.

While as a general rule many of us, myself included, support intensification, disagreements often fall to the form it takes and place in which it happens.

For this very reason the City has created a Zoning Consistency Team who’s mandate is to identify the character of particular areas, then draft legislation for Council approval that would enhance zoning protections to defend that character.

Commencing their work in several wards, ours included, they will be seeking input from Community Associations particularly on height, massing and rear/side setbacks of proposed developments as well as those already in place in the community.

A feedback form will be available starting today April 24, 2013 at www.ottawa.ca/infill. I would encourage members of your respective communities to participate by providing feedback by May 17, 2013.
